Rizzoli & Isles Season 5 Episode 4 Doomsday (3)

On the latest episode of “Rizzoli & Isles,” it was Armageddon time, on “Doomsday.” Okay, not really, but it’s only natural that the show would want to get in on all the apocalyptic madness happening all over the place lately. (See also the shows “The Walking Dead,” “The 100,” “Defiance,” and “Dominion,” among others; to say nothing of films like “Snowpiercer” and “The Rover” or franchises like “Divergent” and “The Hunger Games.”)

In this case, we saw the many answers people had for the question: how exactly will the world end? Would it be global warming/climate change? Zombie apocalypse? Robot and/or computer take-over, a la “The Terminator” or “2001: A Space Odyssey”? In this case, the main victim thought it was going to be an airborne virus, possibly set off by America’s enemies. He wasn’t entirely off the mark, in his case, at least, as he did indeed end up killed by a deadly gas. Unfortunately for him, it was in the very enclosure that was meant to save him from such real-world occurrences. Not exactly money well spent, needless to say.

This episode revolved around every paranoiac’s favorite way out of whatever form the apocalypse would take: the bomb shelter/panic room. One of the culprits was indeed the very person that designed such supposed safe havens, but wasn’t above leaving himself an “in” to be able to snatch anything valuable his clients left locked up in them, i.e. diamonds, gold, even medication. This so-called “marauder” eventually got his as well, once again somewhat ironically, as he died underneath the structure he himself built as he was leaving and or approaching it from said secret entrance, when the whole shebang went, well, bang. (Or should I say “boom,” given TNT’s wonky catchphrase this summer?)

In the end, it was another would-be conspiracy nut that proved to be behind it all, or in cahoots with the contractor who built and installed the shelters, at least. He had the gold the victim had stashed in his shelter, along with a variety of other stuff, all of which added up to him getting very busted in the end, as the team had someone drop a canister of tear gas into the pipe sticking out of the ground above where he was hiding, which Rizzoli spotted underneath a decidedly fake looking tree stump. Can you say epic fail?

I liked the irony in the way everyone died in the episode, taken down by the very shelters that were supposed to protect them and/or keep them safe. Two dead bodies later, it was clear that no one was particularly being kept safe by any of these places, with many others paying the price for having them in the first place. It just goes to show you that you can’t prepare for everything.

This episode was a lot of fun and packed to the brim with memorable Rizzoli & Isles moments, as Maura paid lip service to the internet’s own favorite conspiracy theory and told a would-be suitor of Jane’s that they were gay- which, of course, didn’t faze him in the slightest, though pregnancy ultimately did the trick. I’m sure R&I ‘shippers loved it when Rizzoli appointed Isles the godmother of her baby, after her second near-death experience in a matter of weeks led her to think ahead to the future for once.

There was also some amusing back and forth banter between the girls in regards to everyone-but-Maura’s favorite crime-solving sleuths, the Scooby-Doo gang. Maura also indulged the motorcycle contingent with her purchase of a Triumph cycle with a sidecar, which Rizzoli looked hilariously out-of-place in. Frankie and Korsak also had their moments, with the former expounding on this own end-of-the-world theories while the latter contemplated either retiring or submitting himself to a quiz to potentially become a higher-ranking official.

All in all, a solid enough episode of “Rizzoli & Isles.” What did you think of the episode? Did you figure out who done it? What’s your favorite conspiracy theory? If you had the wherewithal, would you also get yourself a shelter as well, knowing what you now know? How do you think Rizzoli will fare as a mother? Sound off below with your craziest theories and see you next week!!
