24: LIVE ANOTHER DAY: Kate (Yvonne Strahovski, L) and Erik (Gbenga Akinnagbe, R)

At this point in the run of 24: Live Another Day, we’ve all but exhausted the usual stack of 24 truisms. Depending on how you feel about the series, this familiarity is either exciting or tiresome. As always, the truth lies somewhere in between. Jack doing his thing is never not entertaining, but the show is starting to suffer from the same fatigue seen toward the tail end of its original incarnation. Circumstances are tweaked slightly thanks to Jack’s issues with the Russians, but the show is clearly relying on trying to execute its same playbook its had for years. Fortunately for them, there is few shows better at executing their playbook on network television.

Naturally, most of the elements that worked really in this episode involved Jack in hot pursuit. After Navarro take the override device at the end of the last episode allowed this episode to jump off with an exhilarating pace that it struggled to maintain in spots. As big bad guys reveal themselves, exhibition is usually forced to follow. Because last week the show got reset with one simple toss out a window, this week forced us into long conversations with people who really haven’t been that interesting throughout the course of the season. Once Navarro was captured, the pace grinded to a halt as Aidan Cross attempted to explain to Chloe all the reasons why he’s awesome for now having the override device. Of course, his reasons no longer matter considering some Chinese guys came in and started running his show. His presence won’t be missed. Also, it’s not entirely clear why Chloe is still alive considering every single other person is dead, but asking those types of questions defeats the purpose.

The other massive downer in the episode involved Boudreau and his continued involvement with the Russians. A few episodes ago, I applauded the show for making me feel for the guy considering he put his marriage at risk to help the President commit suicide-by-hellfire missile. It seemed like a nice moment of redemption for a character who had come off like a smarmy weasel for the majority of the season. Now that’s all been undone. Watching a chief political official for the United States government give up a top field agent because he’s jealous of the agent’s past relationship with his wife really hurt my feelings. I don’t think government officials are immune from petty jealousy, but I do like to think petty jealousy would not cause them to jeopardize national security. There are numerous other ways to get the Russians involved pursuing Jack. It didn’t have to completely ruin a character on the show. I’ve never really been a Tate Donovan fan through the years, but he deserved far better than what he’s been handed to play in these 10 episodes and counting.

Considering there are only two episodes remaining, there seems to be a lot of loose ends for Jack to wrap up. Hopefully the exposition is out of the way, and Jack can go do those Jack Bauer things we came to see.

Exclusive ‘Murder in the First’ Interview: Kathleen Robertson Discusses Last Week’s Shocking Episode and More HDHQ

murder in the first whos your daddy

TNT’s Murder in the First has been one of the summer’s most pleasant surprises. The crime drama hails from TV legend Steven Bochco (NYPD Blue) and boasts a stellar cast with Taye Diggs and Kathleen Robertson at the heart of the series as partners Terry and Hildy. Last Monday’s episode found Robertson’s Hildy taking a dark turn when she killed a man guilty of domestic violence just as it was revealed that Hildy was a past victim of abuse herself.

Robertson recently chatted with TV Equals about the explosive episode, what it means for Hildy moving forward and why she feels so comfortable in Hildy’s shoes. Catch the fallout from last week in episode four of Murder in the First airing tonight, Monday, June 30th at 10PM ET/PT on TNT.

TV Equals: Post episode three, what kind of state of mind is Hildy going to be in?

Kathleen Robertson: Things with the Erich Blunt case are ramping up, so when she gets back to work she is very much aware that all eyes are on her and that after what happened she is being watched very carefully by everybody. She has to almost bury it and present herself as if it didn’t happen– she’s just back to work and it is business as usual. It’s difficult and it is definitely living within her, as it will forever, and it is a difficult thing.

She took a life, and regardless of what everybody said, and regardless that she knew she had to do it, it’s a huge thing. It’s obviously something that will change her forever.

TV Equals: Last week, Hildy also revealed she was a victim of domestic abuse. How does that part of her past affect how you play her?

Kathleen Robertson: For me, it was important to determine what it was specifically and what the backstory was. We don’t delve into it too much, but I thought it was really important for the audience to have some understanding of what happened. We delve into it in a later episode. It is very clear to me that her husband was an alcoholic and it got physical. When it started getting physical that was when she said this is over, we can’t do this anymore. I can’t let my daughter see this.

It definitely infuses her personality and her choices, and who she is. I think she is a really strong, tough woman, but I think she is also a little broken underneath. She does a really good job of hiding it for her daughter and everybody at work, but I think she’s dealing with a lot of difficult stuff from her past and she is trying to mask that and trying to move on.

TV Equals: What is it about Hildy that made you excited to play her?

Kathleen Robertson: Well, I think I really responded to the fact that she is juggling the demands of this incredibly stressful, high stakes job with the demands of being a mom, and not just a mom, but a single mom. I liked that the show depicted both worlds and you got to see the differences between her personal life and her professional life. The fact that she is dating and we get to see that world a little bit too– as an actor it gave me the chance to delve into all of the different aspects of her personality and not just being the cop, which on a lot of cop shows you kind of just get to be the cop, but with this I got to do everything.

TV Equals: Do you think Hildy’s job will interfere with her being a single mother?

Kathleen Robertson: It is definitely a challenge. There was a homicide detective I met in San Francisco that I used as inspiration for the role, and she was also a single mom. We talked a lot about the job and the demands and trying to do it all. She was very frank with me. It’s really hard, and there are some days where it works really well and you get to be regular mom and do it all, then there are other days where the phone rings at three in the morning with her boss calling saying there’s a dead body under the bridge and she has to get her daughter out of bed and haul her over to grandma’s house in the middle of the night to go look at a dead body. And those nights suck.

I think it’s difficult and we definitely explore that over the course of the season. She’s doing the best she can, which is all any of us can do.

TV Equals: What do you feel are the advantages of covering just one case over the course of a season?

Kathleen Robertson: I love the format, it’s kind of my favorite format. I just think it is really rewarding. From an audience point of view it is like investing in one, really good book or watching a long movie. You get to invest in these characters, and it has a very clear middle, beginning and end. I think this format, people are really responding to it. It’s that thing where you can talk to your friends about it– it gets that water cooler conversation going with people and you are just racing to get to the end and figure out what it is all about.

TV Equals: The dynamic between Hildy and Terry is so well drawn. How do you see their partnership?

Kathleen Robertson: I’ve always felt that deep down inside she has always felt very much an attraction toward him and a feeling that they would be a good match, but he has always been married and she was married, so it was something that was never going to happen. When his wife dies, it opens up a lot of questions and it opens up a can of worms, so to speak, and makes things more challenging and complicated for both of them as the season progresses.

I think ultimately they would be really good together and a good match, but the timing is just not right. It just can’t be, and I think they are both smart enough to know they have to be professional and they would both say it would never work. So there is this underlying tension that rolls through everything in terms of their relationship.

TV Equals: How much of Kathleen is in Hildy?

Kathleen Robertson: Well, I think I am pretty honest and I don’t edit. She’s that way too, which I like. I really feel comfortable playing this character. I’ve never played a cop and I’ve always wanted to because it felt like it would be a comfortable sort of thing for me to do. It has been. It feels like a good fit for me.

Sometimes you play a role and you feel a little bit outside of it, looking in. When I get Hildy’s boots on and her gear and pick up her badge, I sort of feel like, “Yeah, I’m her, I’m in it.” It feels good and really natural and comfortable for me. I really hope we get to do it again.

Any pet owner knows their cat, dog or budgie has feelings. But many scientists considered it absurd to entertain questions about how animals might feel or that they might be thinking. It was unacceptable to ascribe experiences like delight, boredom or self-awareness to non-humans. Now scientists are exploring the complex mysteries of the animal consciousness.

In Mysteries of the Animal Mind we meet the researchers who are finding growing evidence of compassion, cooperation, altruism, empathy, intelligence and communication in all sorts of different species. Chimps who empathize; elephants who problem-solve; lemurs who count and lizard can solve problems just as well as many birds or mammals. Are these animals acting on instinct? Is it simply trial and error? Or is it something more?

Halt and Catch Fire Season 1 Review “Adventure” HDHQ

Halt and Catch Fire (AMC) Episode 5 Adventure (3)

On the latest episode of “Halt and Catch Fire,” it was deal-making time, and it was quite the “Adventure,” to be sure. As ever, the lion’s share of it fell to Joe, but by the end, Gordon pulled a valuable assist, much to Joe’s amazement- although, to be fair, it was Gordon who very nearly sunk the deal in the first place.

After wowing some potential investors early on in the episode, Joe did the same with some potential Japanese clients with the tech that could be used to make the team’s proposed portable PC a reality. The company the clients represented was Kazoku, who had just come out with a lightweight watch with a mini-television on it- kind of like a precursor to the way we now watch video on our phones, only even smaller.

The idea Gordon had was to use their LCD screen material for the PCs, since they were ideally lightweight in a way that would also bring down the overall weight of the proposed portable PCs. Using an in with his stepfather, Gordon set up the meet, and Joe drove it home, but then Gordon scuttled it by mouthing off in the bathroom to a horrified Japanese businessman. The next day, Joe begged them for a second chance before they could leave, only to discover that Gordon had done the same- and had already succeeded without Joe’s help. Awkward!

Meanwhile, Cameron was dealing with an aggressively annoying and vindictive manager, who she eventually usurped in a creative coup involving an early computer-based game called “Adventure,” hence the title of the episode. Thankfully, a friend of mine explained this part to me or I would have been somewhat clueless. Basically, it was an early version of online gaming commonly known as LAN (or Local Area Network) parties, in which a group of computers within a small area- i.e. an office, as was the case here- were synced so that everyone could share in the game at hand.

So, after accosting Joe about firing the manager and letting her take over, Cameron polled the team about who had come the farthest in the game, making it a point to ferret out the “cheaters” who had used “back doors” to work around various roadblocks in the game. Those who fared best were given a pass and Cam picked for the team. Those “coder monkeys” who either played honestly and didn’t get too far- or didn’t admit to cheating- were let go…as was the manager. Game, set, match, as they say. Point goes to Cameron.

Cameron also won the more unexpected match of going toe-to-toe with Joe’s dad, who he blew off every meeting with, but who showed up at Joe’s place while Cameron was there, cornering her for a not-so-subtle talk that involved his reiterating that Cameron should come and work for him at IBM, and how tongues had been wagging about her ever since she turned them down during the Cardiff raid. He also tried to poison her against Joe, but Cameron wasn’t going for it, even though some of what Joe’s dad said was almost certainly true, at least to a point. Once again, point goes to Cam.

That was really it, but this was an engaging episode, nonetheless. It was fun seeing Cam hold her own against Joe’s dad and the manager alike, and the whole early online gaming thing was fascinating. I also thought the stuff with the Japanese businessmen was engagingly cringe-inducing. You just knew after a point that Gordon was going to screw it up, and so he did, royally. I do hope that his wife does not, with that whole situation with her boss, who was clearly flirting with her. Hopefully, she doesn’t go there, because I like her and Gordon as a couple. Plus, that guy was kind of a dick, right? Talk about “all hat, no cattle”…

What did you think of “Halt and Catch Fire”? Were you captivated by Joe’s dad’s tales of what Joe had been up to in the past? How about the big reveal about Cam’s dad? Do you think Donna will cheat? Will Cam and Joe make up and get involved again? What will be the next hurdle everyone faces? Sound off below, and see you next time!
